White Orchid Watercolor

We didn’t have any plans during the Labor Day Weekend.  Just stayed home.  So, I picked up my brush and paints and began this painting that I had been wanting to do for a while.  I was inspired by the beautiful orchids at the American Orchid Society in Delray Beach and had taken many photographs there.  This is one of my favorites.

Here are the steps I took:

I sketched out the flowers and then painted white mask around them to keep them white while I did the wash (2nd step)

I wet the paper all around the flowers and applied colors. The colors infused together and give an unfocused feel.

After it dried, I rubbed off the mask and began to paint in the details, bringing in more focus and painting the background (negative painting)

I continued to paint in the details and shadows and letting it dry in-between. Each time, the flowers became more focused, just like moving the lens on the camera.

This was a lot of fun and the time went by so fast, I didn’t even notice it.  Hope you like it!
